Choose a Threaded Adapter by Both Ends

Define End A and End B separately before ordering: connection standard, male or female gender, nominal size, thread pitch and sealing method. A female to female thread adapter works only when both components have compatible male connections. For bare hose, match the barb outside diameter to the hose inside diameter and use the clamp required for that hose. When one side is AN and the other is tapered pipe thread, compare AN to NPT adapters. When both ends use 37° AN flare connections, choose from AN to AN fittings.

Match the Seal and Route Before Tightening

AN flare connections seal at matching 37° seats, ORB ports seal at an O ring, and NPT connections seal through tapered threads with the compatible sealant specified for the component and fluid. Do not select an automotive hose adapter by outside diameter alone because NPT, AN, ORB and metric threads can appear similar while sealing differently. Choose a straight, 45°, 90°, tee or swivel configuration that fits the available clearance without forcing the hose sideways. Confirm both end sizes, fluid compatibility, material, pressure and temperature ratings for the selected item, then test and inspect the completed connection before operation.

How do I choose the correct threaded adapter for my fuel system?

Identify both connections separately. For End A and End B, record the thread standard, male or female gender, exact size and thread pitch, and the required sealing method. Then choose the required straight, angled, reducer or branching configuration. Do not rely on hose outside diameter or visual similarity. Before ordering, confirm the selected adapter’s listed fluid compatibility, material, pressure range and temperature range.

An NPT adapter uses tapered pipe threads and should receive only the compatible sealant specified for the component and fluid. An AN adapter uses straight threads to bring matching 37° flare seats together; the flare surfaces create the seal. An ORB adapter uses straight threads with an O ring sealing against the machined port. Do not apply thread tape or sealant to an AN flare seat or an ORB sealing surface unless the component manufacturer specifically requires it.

Use a female to female thread adapter when both components already have male connections. Identify the standard and size on each side before choosing the adapter. A female NPT coupling is not interchangeable with a female AN union, even if the threads appear to engage. Select an equal coupling when both ends match, or a reducer only when the two confirmed sizes differ. Remember that the smallest internal passage remains the flow restriction.

Threaded connectors join ports or components that already have defined threads. A hose barb adapter enters a compatible flexible hose and normally relies on the required clamp for retention. An AN hose end attaches to a hose construction designed for that hose end and presents an AN flare connection. A quick disconnect fitting uses its own locking and sealing system for faster separation. A banjo fitting changes line direction in limited space and seals with the specified washers or sealing components. Choose according to the existing connection, hose construction, operating fluid and service needs.

Choose a straight adapter when both connections align naturally. Use a 45° or 90° adapter when it creates a cleaner route and reduces sharp hose bends or sideways load. Select a tee adapter only when the system requires a branch. A swivel feature may be intended only for installation alignment, so do not assume every swivel adapter can rotate continuously during operation. Check wrench clearance, hose bend space and nearby components before ordering. Start the threads by hand, follow the applicable installation instructions and inspect the system under its normal test procedure.
