About this item

Every aftermarket gauge and sender in the US market is threaded 1/8" NPT. Almost every modern engine port is metric. That single mismatch is why a sensor thread adapter ends up in nearly every swap, build and gauge install. This one covers the four metric sizes that account for most of them, and ships with the aluminum crush washer that most adapters leave out.

Opens the Port You Already Have

Thread this adapter into an existing metric sensor port and it hands you a standard 1/8" NPT female thread. On a GM LS swap, that means running a modern oil pressure sender in the factory M16x1.5 boss, or an electric temperature gauge in the M12x1.5 cylinder head port, without drilling, tapping or replacing the housing. The male thread is straight and seals on its face, so it will not wedge or crack a cast aluminum port the way a tapered fitting can. 

Two Joints, Two Different Rules

This adapter creates two separate sealed joints, and they are sealed in opposite ways. Getting this backwards is the single most common cause of a weeping install.

The metric side seals on the flat face of the aluminum crush washer, not on the threads. Nothing goes on those threads except a light film of assembly lube. Thread sealant or tape here only prevents the washer from seating flat.

The 1/8" NPT side is a tapered thread that seals on thread engagement, so it does need a fuel-rated or oil-rated thread sealant. Liquid sealant is preferred over PTFE tape, since tape can shed into an oil gallery.

Installs With Hand Tools

No special equipment, no port machining. Back the original sensor out, seat the new crush washer, thread the adapter in by hand until the washer contacts the boss, then bring it snug with a wrench. Because the washer is what seals, the goal is a controlled crush, not maximum torque. Overtightening splits the washer and the joint will seep. Use a fresh washer any time the adapter comes back out.

Q: What thread do I actually have on my engine?

A: Measure the outside diameter of the male port thread in millimeters, then measure the pitch. M12x1.5 measures roughly 12mm across with 1.5mm between thread crests, and the same logic applies to M14, M16 and M18. The critical step is the pitch, not the diameter. M12x1.5 and M12x1.25 measure identically across the threads and will start to thread into each other before binding and damaging the port. A five dollar thread pitch gauge removes all doubt and is worth buying before you order.

Q: Will this fit the fuel pressure test port on an LS fuel rail?

A: No. The factory test port on a GM LS fuel rail is a -4AN thread with a Schrader valve behind it, not a metric thread. For that location you need an AN adapter rather than a metric one. This adapter is for the metric sensor ports on the engine itself, most commonly the M16x1.5 oil pressure boss and the M12x1.5 cylinder head temperature port. If you are plumbing a fuel pressure take-off, start with the AN fitting range instead.

Q: Where is the oil pressure sensor port on an LS engine?

A: On Gen 3 and Gen 4 LS engines it sits at the rear of the block in the valley, above the bellhousing flange, and uses an M16x1.5 thread from the factory. This is the port most LS swap builders adapt to 1/8" NPT so they can run an aftermarket sender that matches the rest of their gauge cluster. Verify your specific engine before ordering, since port thread has varied across the LS and LT families.

Q: Do I need thread sealant, and where does it go?

A: Sealant goes on the 1/8" NPT female port only, applied to the male threads of the sensor you are installing. The metric side seals on the aluminum crush washer and its threads must stay clean. Use a liquid thread sealant rated for oil or fuel rather than PTFE tape, because tape fragments can break loose and travel into an oil gallery or a fuel filter.

Q: Can I reuse the aluminum crush washer?

A: Treat it as single use. The washer seals by deforming permanently against the boss face, so once crushed it has already given up the material it needed to fill the surface imperfections. Reinstalling on a used washer is the most common reason a previously dry joint starts weeping. Aluminum crush washers in these sizes are inexpensive and widely available, so keep a spare with the tool kit.

Q: How tight is tight enough?

A: Thread it in by hand until the washer just contacts the boss, then bring it snug with a wrench until you feel the washer stop compressing. That resistance point is the target. There is no benefit to going past it, and going well past it splits the washer or galls an aluminum port. If your engine manufacturer publishes a torque figure for the original sensor at that port, use theirs.

Q: Which way will my gauge or sensor end up facing?

A: Wherever the thread stops. A straight adapter on a tapered NPT thread cannot be clocked, so the sensor lands in whatever orientation correct tightening produces. If the connector or gauge face has to point a specific direction for clearance, add a 1/8" NPT street elbow above this adapter, or mount the sensor remotely on a short line. Never loosen a seated joint to aim it.

Q: Will the adapter affect my gauge reading?

A: For pressure readings, no. Static pressure is the same throughout a connected volume, so the adapter does not change the number. For temperature readings, it can. Moving a coolant temp sensor further from the coolant by the length of an adapter can introduce a small lag and a slight offset, since the probe now sits in a pocket rather than directly in flow. This is normal and generally within a few degrees, but it is worth knowing before you chase a reading that seems slightly low.

Q: Can I stack this with a tee so I keep the factory sensor?

A: This part is a straight adapter with a single port, so it replaces the original sensor rather than running alongside it. If you need the factory sensor and an aftermarket gauge live at the same time, which is often the case when the ECU or the dash idiot light depends on the original, you need a tee adapter with a female port, a male port and a side port. Stacking adapters also extends the sensor further from the block, which increases vibration load on it, so keep the stack as short as possible.

Q: Will my sensor physically fit inside the adapter?

A: Check the length and diameter of your sensor probe before installing. Some temperature senders and older mechanical gauge probes have a long or wide tip that bottoms out inside a reducing adapter rather than passing through it. This is a known issue across the category, not specific to any one brand. If your sender has an unusually long probe, confirm the internal bore before ordering, and choose the largest metric size your port allows.
