Oil Cooler Kits for Engine Oil Temperature Control

Turbo boost, track sessions, heavy towing, sustained high RPM and hot weather can add more heat than the factory oil system was designed to reject. Excessive oil temperature may reduce viscosity and oil film strength, limiting the lubrication needed to protect bearings, turbochargers and other loaded components. A properly installed engine oil cooler adds heat rejection capacity and supports more consistent oil temperature control during demanding driving.

This collection currently features an Evil Energy 10 row oil cooler and catch can kit. The two components perform different jobs. The stacked plate oil cooler supports fluid heat management, while the 300 ml baffled catch can helps separate oil mist and moisture from crankcase gases before they reach the intake. An external oil cooler can support long term reliability, but it will not correct low oil level, low oil pressure, a failed factory cooler or an existing engine cooling fault.

How to Choose the Right Engine Oil Cooler Size

Row count is only one part of selecting an engine oil cooler kit. Core width, height, fluid capacity, oil flow, available airflow and installation space all affect performance cooling. The current collection product offers two 10 row core formats. Larger 16 row and 19 row options are available through the related engine oil cooler collection.

Use the smallest cooler that maintains the vehicle manufacturer or engine builder’s recommended oil temperature during the hardest normal use. A larger core is not automatically better. Without suitable thermostatic control, an oversized cooler may slow oil warmup during cold weather or normal street driving.

Verify Oil Lines, Adapters and Mounting Before Ordering

These are universal oil cooler kits intended for custom installation. Universal does not mean that every engine, automatic transmission or manual transmission can connect without additional parts.

  • Choose one fluid circuit: engine oil, automatic transmission fluid and differential oil use separate circuits and vehicle specific connection points. One cooler must not connect multiple fluid systems together.
  • Confirm the engine connection: an engine oil installation normally requires a compatible takeoff and return adapter, sandwich plate or dedicated engine adapter. Confirm whether a thermostatic sandwich plate is required and whether it is included.
  • Separate the thread specifications: the M16×1.5 adapters supplied with the bundle belong to the catch can PCV connections. They do not identify the engine oil filter thread or replace the engine oil adapter.
  • Measure the oil lines: the cooler hoses are listed as 3.3 ft and 3.9 ft. Confirm that they reach without contacting the exhaust, sharp edges, steering or suspension. Do not cut an assembled hose until the hose end type and reassembly procedure are verified.
  • Plan the mounting position: place the cooler in clean airflow with a clear hot air exit path and isolate it from vibration. An oil cooler mounting bracket may be required. Low speed towing and off road use may also require fan assisted airflow.
  • Check the PCV configuration: the catch can version without a breather filter is intended for a sealed PCV layout. Select the breather filter version only when the crankcase system is designed for a vented configuration.
  • Commission the system correctly: account for the added oil capacity, establish oil pressure, check the final fluid level and inspect every connection immediately and again after the first complete heat cycle.

What are the benefits of installing an external engine oil cooler on a turbo, towing or diesel vehicle?

An external engine oil cooler adds heat rejection capacity when turbo boost, towing, track driving, sustained high RPM or hot weather pushes oil temperature beyond the recommended operating range. Better oil temperature control helps the oil retain the viscosity and film strength required for lubrication.

On a diesel or towing vehicle, the benefit is most noticeable under sustained load. However, a universal cooler does not replace a failed factory oil cooler or correct low oil pressure, restricted coolant flow or another existing fault. Confirm actual oil temperature before choosing an upgrade.

Choose an oil cooler kit by measured oil temperature, available airflow, core dimensions, fluid capacity and installation space rather than row count alone. A 10 row cooler is generally easier to package. A 16 row core provides more frontal area within the related 330 mm product family, while a 19 row core provides still more surface area for higher sustained heat loads.

The current Evil Energy combination kit only includes 10 row cooler options. Larger cores are sold through the separate engine oil cooler range. Use thermostatic control when needed to prevent slow warmup or overcooling.

Mount the engine oil cooler where air can pass through the full core and hot air can exit behind it. Secure the cooler with a rigid bracket while isolating it from excessive vibration. Do not allow the oil lines to support the cooler’s weight. Route hoses away from exhaust heat, sharp edges, belts, fans, steering and suspension movement. Avoid tight bends and support long hose sections. For towing, off road driving or other low speed use, fan assisted airflow may be more effective than mounting a larger core in a location with little natural airflow.

The cooler core may be used with compatible engine oil, automatic transmission fluid or differential oil, but each application requires a separate fluid circuit and the correct adapters. An automatic transmission may have existing cooler supply and return lines that can be adapted. Many manual transmissions do not have a pumped external cooler circuit, so a cooler core alone is not a direct fit and a custom pump, pickup, return and control system may be required. Using the product as an engine oil cooler is independent of whether the vehicle has an automatic or manual transmission.

The current Evil Energy combination kit lists two CPE cooler hoses measuring 3.3 ft and 3.9 ft. The catch can side includes a 5 ft hose and M16×1.5 to AN6, AN8 or AN10 adapters. Those M16×1.5 adapters are for the catch can PCV ports, not the engine oil circuit.

A vehicle specific oil takeoff and return adapter, thermostatic sandwich plate, additional fittings or an oil cooler mounting bracket may still be required. Confirm the actual cooler port, engine adapter thread, hose end size and bracket contents before ordering.

Do not cut an assembled hose unless its reusable hose end design and assembly procedure have been verified.
