An extremely clogged fuel filter restricts fuel flow to the engine, which then makes the fuel pump work harder to compensate for the reduced throughput, thus hastening wear and tear that may shorten its operating life and even lead to complete failure. In the worst possible blockage scenario, a completely clogged filter is so detrimental to engine performance that it may cause severely erratic performance of the engine, stuttering, and stalling with general loss of power output-a scenario unwanted by any driver.
