How can I tell if an ignition coil is bad?

Common bad ignition coil signs include a flashing or steady check engine light, P0300 or cylinder specific P0301 through P0308 codes, rough idle, hesitation or shudder during acceleration, loss of power, hard starting, stalling and poor fuel economy. These symptoms do not prove that the ignition coil is faulty because a worn spark plug, damaged coil boot or connector, fuel injector problem or low compression can cause the same misfire.

If the check engine light flashes or the engine shakes severely, stop driving when it is safe and arrange service. Continued misfiring can send unburned fuel into the exhaust and overheat the catalytic converter.

Use a diagnosis that confirms the cause rather than replacing a coil from a misfire code alone.

  1. Scan for P0300 and cylinder specific P0301 through P0308 codes, freeze frame data and live misfire counts.
  2. Inspect the coil housing, connector, boot, spark plug and plug well for cracks, corrosion, carbon tracking, excessive plug gap, oil or water.
  3. With the ignition off and the engine cool, move the suspected coil to another cylinder only when both positions use the same part. Test again under the same safe conditions. A misfire that follows the coil is strong evidence of a faulty coil.
  4. To test an ignition coil with a multimeter, use the exact wiring diagram and resistance specification for that vehicle and coil part number. An open, shorted or out of specification circuit can identify a fault, but an in specification reading does not prove that the coil will work correctly when hot or under load. Many modern coil on plug units cannot be fully evaluated by resistance alone.
  5. If the result remains unclear, use the manufacturer’s approved spark test or an oscilloscope and rule out wiring, injector and compression faults. Never probe the high voltage output while the engine is running.

On supported Ford vehicles, Mode $06 can reveal current or recent cylinder misfire counts, but it identifies a misfire pattern rather than proving that a Ford ignition coil is defective. A Ford F150 ignition coil on a 4.6L or 5.4L engine, and LS ignition coils or LS1 ignition coils, may pass an idle check yet fail under heat or load. Follow the service manual’s test limits instead of using one universal 30 kV spark gap. Evil Energy coil resistance values also vary by part number, so 0.49 ohm is not a universal specification.

There is no universal mileage or scheduled replacement interval for every ignition coil. Many coils are changed only after testing confirms a failure. Heat, vibration, worn spark plugs, excessive plug gap, oil or water in the plug well and electrical supply problems can shorten coil life.

Inspect the coils, boots and plug wells whenever the spark plugs are serviced and repair the underlying leak, plug or connector problem. If one coil fails, test the remaining coils instead of assuming the complete set must always be replaced.

An older distributor system may use one coil for the entire engine. A wasted spark coil pack commonly serves two cylinders, while most late model coil on plug engines use one coil directly above each spark plug. A four cylinder therefore usually has four coils, a V6 usually has six and a V8 usually has eight.

To replace the ignition coil, first let the engine cool and follow the service manual’s battery disconnection procedure. Remove any cover blocking access, release the electrical connector without pulling its wires, remove the correct fastener and lift the coil straight out. Inspect the spark plug, boot and plug well before installing the replacement.

Seat the new coil fully, tighten the fastener to the manufacturer’s torque specification, reconnect the connector and perform a safe road test. Fastener size and access vary by engine, so 7 mm or 8 mm is not a universal Ford specification.

Match the complete year, make, model, trim and engine, then verify the VIN or engine code, OE or UF cross reference, connector pin count and shape, mounting points, boot length, coil type and package quantity. Engine displacement alone is not always enough because connectors and mounting designs can change between model years or engine variants.
