PTFE hose is relatively firm and requires dedicated PTFE hose ends. CPE tubing offers a different balance of flexibility, pressure capability and fluid compatibility. Aluminum hard line is useful for long, orderly chassis runs but requires proper cutting, deburring, bending and tube specific connections. It must not be used as pressurized brake line.

What Should I Check Before Routing Fuel Tubing?

A clean installation depends on the complete flow path, not the tubing alone. Check the tank outlet, pump, filters, regulator, rail or carburetor ports and return connection before choosing a diameter. The narrowest hose, fitting or adapter in the path can become a restriction even when the main line uses a larger AN size.

  1. Confirm the medium: Verify gasoline, diesel, ethanol blend, E85, methanol, oil, coolant or vacuum compatibility for the exact tubing selected.
  2. Confirm actual dimensions: Compare hose ID or tube OD rather than assuming that every product with the same AN label has the same internal passage.
  3. Match the fitting system: PTFE, CPE, push lock, barb and hardline connections use different retention and sealing methods. Use hardline fittings designed for the selected tube size when transitioning to an AN system.
  4. Map the route before cutting: Allow for engine movement, suspension travel and service access. Keep the line away from exhaust heat, sharp edges and rotating components.
  5. Support the line: Use suitable clamps, separators, bulkhead fittings or grommets from the hose and tube management range to reduce abrasion and vibration.
  6. Inspect the completed system: Check fitting engagement, hose bend radius, clearance and every connection under the system’s intended operating pressure before driving.

What Type Of Automotive Tubing Should I Use For A Custom Fuel System?

Choose according to the fluid, operating pressure, temperature, required flexibility and fitting system.

PTFE fuel tubing is a strong starting point for EFI, return and ethanol fuel applications when the selected product explicitly lists the fuel being used. It is relatively firm and requires PTFE specific hose ends.

Conductive PTFE tubing adds a conductive inner layer for applications such as E85 or methanol systems where static dissipation is required.

CPE fuel line is useful when flexible routing is a priority, but its approved fluids, pressure and temperature must be checked for the exact hose.

SAE J30R9 fuel injection hose is designed for flexible EFI fuel routing and is available from Evil Energy in 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 inch inner diameters.

If a fuel is not listed for the selected tubing, do not assume that the inner liner, reinforcement and fittings can tolerate it.

Aluminum hard line is useful for long, orderly runs along a chassis because it holds its shape and can reduce the amount of flexible hose required. It must be cut square, deburred, bent without flattening and connected with fittings designed for its tube outside diameter. It must not be used for pressurized brake lines.

Flexible braided fuel tubing is more suitable near the engine, pump, tank or other areas where vibration, powertrain movement or service access must be accommodated. Many custom systems use rigid tubing for the main chassis route and short flexible transitions at moving components.

Plan the complete route before cutting. Respect the published minimum bending radius, keep the line away from exhaust heat, sharp edges, rotating shafts and suspension travel, and allow enough movement at the engine and tank.

AN flare connections seal at the flare seat rather than at the threads. Thread sealant should not be applied to the AN flare sealing surface.
