External fuel pump

External fuel pumps are high-performance external electric fuel pumps designed to be mounted outside of the fuel tank. They are a popular choice for performance vehicles, engine swaps, and EFI upgrades because they offer incredible installation flexibility and easy serviceability. Unlike in-tank pumps that must be submerged inside the fuel tank, an external pump can be conveniently and safely mounted to a frame rail, firewall, or near the fuel filter, making it the ideal fuel delivery solution for custom builds.

Why Choose an External Fuel Pump?

For many custom projects, especially classic cars being converted from carburetor to EFI, using an external fuel pump is the simplest and most effective option.

  • Easy to Install & Service: The single biggest advantage is that there is no need to drop or modify the fuel tank. This makes installation, inspection, and future replacement incredibly straightforward.
  • Powerful Performance: High-flow models, specifically an external efi fuel pump, can deliver extremely high flow rates (e.g., 300LPH or 405LPH) to easily support high-horsepower turbocharged or V8 engines.
  • Universal Application: They are a "universal" solution that can be adapted to almost any vehicle. They are also the perfect choice for setting up dual-pump systems or fuel surge tanks.
  • Effective Cooling: Mounting the pump in the airflow under the chassis helps it stay cool during operation.

EVIL ENERGY Fuel Pump: The Reliable Choice for External Pumps

When you need an external electric fuel pump that is both powerful and durable, an EVIL ENERGY fuel pump is your guarantee of quality. EVIL ENERGY specializes in providing external pumps that have been rigorously tested on both the street and the track.

We offer high-pressure external EFI fuel pump models designed for modern fuel injection, ensuring stable, uninterrupted fuel delivery even under high boost and high RPM. Every EVIL ENERGY fuel pump is built to be the reliable heart of your high-performance engine.

Important Note: High-Pressure (EFI) vs. Low-Pressure (Carb)

It is critical to select the correct external fuel pump for your application:

  • External EFI Fuel Pump: This is a high-pressure pump (43-58+ PSI) designed only for fuel injection systems.
  • External Carburetor Pump: This is a low-pressure pump (5-9 PSI) designed only for carburetors.

EVIL ENERGY offers both types of external pumps. Please ensure you choose the correct model for your project.

FAQs about External fuel pump

What is an external fuel pump?

An external fuel pump, also known as an inline fuel pump, is an external electric fuel pump that is installed outside of the fuel tank. Unlike an 'in-tank' pump, which is submerged in fuel, an external pump draws fuel through a line from the tank and pushes it toward the engine.

The primary advantage is ease of installation and service. Because it's mounted outside the tank (often on the vehicle's frame rail), you do not need to drop or remove the fuel tank to install or replace it. This makes it a top choice for EFI conversions on classic cars, custom builds, or for anyone who wants easier maintenance.

This is the most important question. It depends entirely on your engine:

  • External EFI Fuel Pump: Choose this if you have a fuel-injected engine. These are high-pressure pumps (43- 58+ PSI) needed to run injectors.
  • External Carburetor Pump: Choose this if you have a carbureted engine. These are low-pressure pumps (5-9 PSI).
  • Warning: Using an external efi fuel pump on a carburetor (without a special, step-down regulator) will flood it. Using a low-pressure pump on an EFI system will not supply enough fuel for the engine to even start.

For best results, you should mount the pump as close to the fuel tank as possible and below the fuel level of the tank. External pumps are designed to 'push' fuel effectively but are not as efficient at 'pulling' it over long distances or uphill. Mounting it low and close to the tank ensures it gets a steady supply of fuel (gravity-fed) and prevents it from running dry, which can cause damage.

An EVIL ENERGY fuel pump is designed for performance and reliability. Whether you need a high-flow external EFI fuel pump for your 500+ HP V8 swap or a steady, reliable low-pressure pump for your classic carburetor, our pumps are built to last. They provide the consistent flow rates you need for your engine to perform at its best.
