Engine Cooling Components

Q: What are the main components of a car's cooling system, and what changes on an LS build?

The loop, in order: Water pump moves the coolant Thermostat decides when it leaves the engine Radiator hose carries it out to the radiator and back Radiator sheds the heat through its core Cooling fan pulls air across that core at low speed Heater hose feeds the heater core for cabin heat Coolant overflow tank absorbs expansion as the system heats and cools An LS swap breaks three of those: The thermostat sits on the water pump and points the wrong way. In another chassis the outlet often aims at a steering box or frame rail. A geometry problem, fixed with a thermostat housing kit or coolant crossover kit , not a bigger radiator. The steam ports are not optional. Both cylinder head vents must route to the highest point in the system. Skipping them is the number one cause of LS swap overheating , and trapped air cooks the heads while the temp sensor still reads normal. Nothing tells the fan to turn on. The donor ECU handled that. Every EVIL ENERGY electric fan includes a 175 to 185°F thermostat relay switch and mounting hardware, so it works on day one.

Q: What are the common problems with LS engine cooling systems, and how do you fix them?

Six issues account for almost everything we see. Steam ports never connected. Coolant disappears with no external leak while the gauge reads fine. Route both head vents to the highest point using small diameter heater hose . The fill point is not the highest point. Many swaps sit the radiator below the heads, so air can never escape. Add a coolant overflow tank mounted above the heads and fill there. Ours are TIG welded aluminum, 1L and 2L, O ring sealed cap, M14 x 1.5 barb for 3/8 inch line. The fan never runs, or never stops. No ECU signal, no fan logic. Use a fan with its own temperature switch. 175 to 185°F is the safe default for street and mild performance builds. The factory mechanical fan is still installed. A belt driven fan moves the least air exactly when you need it most, sitting in traffic. Swap to a 12V electric fan sized to cover as much core as possible. Ours run 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 inch with an 80W motor. The water pump outlet hits something solid. A packaging problem, not a cooling problem. A coolant crossover kit is cheaper than modifying the chassis. Coolant temp is fine but the oil is cooking. This one catches good builders off guard. Sustained RPM, towing, and track use degrade oil long before coolant temperature looks alarming. A bigger radiator does not fix oil temperature. An oil cooler does. Our stacked plate cores run 7 to 30 Row , tested at 116 PSI with 232 PSI burst.

Q: How long do cooling system parts last, and how do I keep them healthy?

Rubber coolant hoses generally last four to five years or 60,000 to 100,000 miles , but heat cycles age them faster than mileage does. A short trip commuter can wear out hoses quicker than a highway car with twice the odometer. Every oil change, spend thirty seconds on the hoses. Cold engine, squeeze the upper and lower radiator hose , check each clamp for residue. Twice a year catches nearly every failure before it strands you. Change coolant every two years or 30,000 miles. Coolant does not lose its ability to carry heat, it loses its corrosion inhibitors. You are replacing the protection package, not the fluid. Replace hoses in pairs. The second hose lived through every identical heat cycle. You have already paid the labor to drain and bleed, so do both. Never reuse old clamps. Tension decays with thermal cycling, and the clamp is the cheapest item on the invoice. Confirm four numbers before ordering. Inside diameter measured at the neck rather than the swollen old hose, total length including clamp overlap, routing shape, and clearance from exhaust components. EVIL ENERGY heater hose is EPDM to SAE 20R3 Class D2, 100 PSI , minus 40°F to 257°F , in 5/16 inch through 1 inch ID up to 25FT. Our transmission and oil cooler hose is fiber reinforced CPE to SAE J1532, 250 PSI working and 1000 PSI burst . Unsure about sizing? Send your year, make, model and measured hose ID to support@ievilenergy.com and we will confirm before you order. Every kit carries a 1 year warranty and 90 day hassle free returns .

Match the Symptom to the Right Cooling System Parts

A failed radiator hose rarely gives you a warning on the highway. It goes from a damp clamp to a cloud of steam in about four seconds, and the bill that follows is not the bill for the hose. US shops quote roughly $765 to $1,826 to replace a radiator and $626 to $1,300 for a heater core, while the coolant components that would have prevented the failure sit between $20 and $60. That is the entire reason this page exists: catch the weak part while it is still a part, not a tow.

Use the table below to go from what your engine is doing to what you actually need. Every row links to parts we stock, and every part on this page ships with the hardware required to finish the job in one session, because a build that stops halfway for a missing clamp is a build that sits in the garage all weekend.

What you are seeing	Most likely cause	What to order
Sweet smell, white crust near a clamp, slow coolant loss	Hose seeping under pressure	Heater hose and radiator hose with fresh clamps
Temp climbs in traffic, drops back down at highway speed	Airflow, not coolant flow	Electric radiator cooling fan
Coolant pushed out of the cap, low level every week	No expansion capacity	Coolant overflow tank
Gauge swings hot then cold, weak cabin heat	Thermostat sticking	Thermostat housing kit
Runs hot towing, on track, or in summer heat	Core capacity maxed out	Radiators and oil coolers
Milky fluid, dark oil residue in the intake	Blow by and oil vapor	Oil catch can kits

Sizing a Radiator Hose or Heater Hose Without Guessing

Hose selection fails on one number more than any other: inside diameter. Measure the ID of the neck the hose slides onto, not the outside of the old hose, which has usually swollen. Then confirm three more things before you order: the routing shape the hose has to follow, the total length including clamp overlap, and whether the run passes near an exhaust component. A hose that touches a manifold will fail early no matter how good the rubber is.

Spec	EVIL ENERGY Heater Hose	EVIL ENERGY Transmission and Oil Cooler Hose
Material	EPDM rubber	Fiber reinforced CPE
Standard	SAE 20R3 Class D2	SAE J1532
Working pressure	100 PSI	250 PSI, 1000 PSI burst
Temperature range	minus 40°F to 257°F	up to 257°F
Available ID	5/16, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 1 inch	5/16, 3/8, 1/2 inch
Lengths	up to 25FT	5FT, 10FT, 20FT
Best for	Heater core, radiator return, overflow tank, big block and classic builds	Transmission cooler lines, engine oil cooler circuits

Buying hose by the roll is also how you stop paying twice. A 10FT length of heater hose covers a full heater circuit plus the overflow run with material left over for the next job, and it lets you cut exact lengths instead of forcing a molded part into a route it was never shaped for.

FAQs about Engine Cooling Components

How do I know if my cooling system is bad?

A cooling system almost never fails without warning. It tells you for weeks. The whole inspection takes two minutes on a cold engine.

Watch how the gauge behaves, not just where it sits. Climbing in traffic but settling at speed points at airflow, so look at the cooling fan. Swinging hot then cold is a sticking thermostat. Creeping up and staying there is the one that needs immediate attention.

Squeeze the hoses cold. A healthy radiator hose feels firm and springs back. Soft and tacky means oil has contaminated the rubber. Hard and crunchy means it will crack the next time you touch it. A bulge means the reinforcement layer inside has already failed.

Look for white crust at the clamps. Dried coolant means the joint is seeping under pressure and evaporating before it hits the ground. This is the cheapest moment to act. A new heater hose costs twenty to forty dollars here. Wait for the blowout and you are paying for a tow.

Check the overflow tank over two weeks. Topping off regularly with no puddle underneath means coolant is leaving as vapor or going somewhere it should not.

If you see white exhaust smoke, milky oil, or coolant vanishing fast with no visible leak, stop driving. That is beyond routine parts and needs diagnosis first.

What are the main components of a car's cooling system, and what changes on an LS build?

The loop, in order:

Water pump moves the coolant
Thermostat decides when it leaves the engine
Radiator hose carries it out to the radiator and back
Radiator sheds the heat through its core
Cooling fan pulls air across that core at low speed
Heater hose feeds the heater core for cabin heat
Coolant overflow tank absorbs expansion as the system heats and cools

An LS swap breaks three of those:

The thermostat sits on the water pump and points the wrong way. In another chassis the outlet often aims at a steering box or frame rail. A geometry problem, fixed with a thermostat housing kit or coolant crossover kit, not a bigger radiator.
The steam ports are not optional. Both cylinder head vents must route to the highest point in the system. Skipping them is the number one cause of LS swap overheating, and trapped air cooks the heads while the temp sensor still reads normal.
Nothing tells the fan to turn on. The donor ECU handled that. Every EVIL ENERGY electric fan includes a 175 to 185°F thermostat relay switch and mounting hardware, so it works on day one.

How much does it cost to fix an engine cooling system?

This question is really two questions wearing one coat: what does the repair cost, and what does waiting cost. Both answers matter, and the gap between them is the entire argument for buying cooling system parts before you need them.

Typical US pricing in 2026, parts and labor at a shop:

Radiator hose replacement runs roughly $150 to $450, and some platforms are quoted as high as $496 to $555. Thermostat and housing, $150 to $350. Coolant flush and bleed, $140 to $250. Cooling fan assembly, $300 to $700. Water pump, around $353 to $413. Heater core, $626 to $1,300. Complete radiator replacement, $765 to $1,826.

Now look at where that money actually goes on a hose job. The hose itself is usually twenty to sixty dollars. Everything above that number is labor: draining the system, fighting a hose that has fused itself to a fitting, cleaning the sealing surfaces, refilling, and bleeding the air out. The part is cheap. Access is expensive. That is why doing it yourself brings the same job down to roughly $35 to $140 including coolant.

Before you commit to the DIY route, understand the one step that is not obvious. The difficulty is not removing the hose. It is bleeding the system afterward. Fill and bleed procedures vary enormously between platforms, some require a specific sequence, some require a funnel adapter, and some have a bleed screw in a place you would never think to look. Air left in the system creates the same localized hot spots described in the LS answer above, with the same silent gauge. Look up the exact procedure for your year, make and model before you drain anything. That single piece of homework is the difference between a ninety minute job and a head gasket.

The takeaway is uncomfortable but simple. The least expensive coolant components in the system exist to protect the most expensive ones. A forty dollar hose and a set of fresh clamps stand between you and a radiator bill that starts at seven hundred and sixty five dollars.
