Heater Hose

A heater hose carries hot coolant between the engine and heater core. A radiator hose is often larger, molded to a vehicle-specific route and may require different reinforcement. A vacuum hose is designed to resist collapse under vacuum, while a fuel hose uses a fuel-resistant liner and a different SAE specification. This EPDM coolant hose is for coolant, water and antifreeze—not gasoline, diesel, engine oil or transmission fluid. Match every heater hose fitting, barb or quick connector to both the hose ID and the vehicle connection.

How to Choose Inside Diameter and Length

Measure the outside diameter of the clean metal/plastic hose barb or read the ID printed on the removed hose; buy hose with the same nominal inside diameter (ID). Do not select by outside diameter. 5/8 heater hose and 3/4 heater hose are common heater-circuit sizes, but the correct size is the one specified for the vehicle or fitting. Smaller 5/16 and 3/8 inch hose is more often used for small coolant, bypass or overflow connections—not automatically as a heater-core replacement.

For a direct replacement, measure the removed hose before cutting. For a custom route, run flexible cord along the intended path, include service slack and trimming allowance, then choose the next available length. A 5FT or 10FT hose usually suits one or several short repairs; 15–25FT is better for multiple/custom runs, while 50FT is a workshop roll. Do not leave unused hose coiled in the engine bay.

Hose ID Hose OD on this product Minimum bend radius Typical buying check
5/16 in. 14 mm 64 mm Small coolant/overflow connection; verify fitting
3/8 in. 16 mm 76 mm Small coolant or bypass line
1/2 in. 20 mm 104 mm Verify OE hose and barb ID
5/8 in. 24 mm 128 mm Common heater circuit size
3/4 in. 28 mm 152 mm Common higher-flow heater circuit size
1 in. 34 mm 200 mm Larger coolant connection; verify routing

Choose the Right Clamp and Fitting

Choose a clamp by the hose’s installed outside diameter, not only its nominal ID. A worm-gear clamp is adjustable and DIY-friendly, but over-tightening can cut or deform rubber. An OE-style spring or constant-tension clamp follows expansion and contraction through heat cycles. Use the vehicle service manual and the clamp manufacturer’s torque—there is no safe universal torque for every band width, fitting material and hose size.

Position the clamp behind the fitting bead, square to the hose, and replace damaged, corroded or distorted clamps. The hose-with-clamps option can simplify a repair, but the included clamp quantity for each 5FT/10FT variant must be confirmed before this benefit is promoted.

Fitment, Routing and Safety Check

Straight bulk hose works where the original route can be reproduced without kinking. Keep the installed bend at or above the listed minimum radius, protect the hose from sharp edges, and route it away from exhaust components, belts and pulleys. Use an abrasion or heat sleeve where the OE route requires protection.

If you searched for a Chevy Cruze radiator heater hose, first verify the model year, engine, molded bends, branches and quick-connect ends. This straight hose is not a direct-fit substitute where the OE Cruze hose is a formed assembly with integrated fittings.

Only work on a fully cold cooling system. After installation, refill with the vehicle-specified coolant, bleed air according to the service procedure, bring the engine to temperature and inspect every connection for leaks. Stop and seek professional help if the heater-core tubes, plastic connectors or buried firewall connections are fragile or hard to access.

FAQs about Heater Hose

How do I choose the right heater hose for my vehicle, and can I mix brands?

Choose by application, inside diameter, working temperature and pressure, coolant compatibility, routing, and connection type—not by brand alone. A different-brandheater core hosecan work when all verified specifications match, but a straight cut-to-length hose cannot replace a molded or branched OE assembly just because the ID is the same. Check year, make, model, engine, hose shape, barb/quick-connect size and clamp range before ordering. For aChevy Cruze radiator heater hose, use a direct-fit assembly when the OE route includes molded bends or integrated fittings.

The size refers to the hoseinside diameter (ID). Measure the clean fitting/barb outside diameter or read the ID marked on the old hose; do not measure the old hose’s outside diameter.5/8 heater hoseand3/4 heater hoseare common heater-circuit sizes. A 5/16 inch hose carries much less flow and is more typical of small coolant or overflow connections. Never step down from 5/8 to 5/16 unless the vehicle design specifically calls for it.

For general passenger-car and light-truck coolant service, look for anEPDM heater hosewith a recognized coolant-hose specification such asSAE 20R3, plus temperature, pressure and ID ratings that meet the vehicle requirements. EPDM is well suited to coolant, heat, ozone and weather exposure. Purpose-built silicone hose can tolerate higher temperatures, but material alone does not determine fit or pressure performance. Neither ordinary EPDM nor silicone heater hose should be used as a fuel or oil hose.

Yes. A leaking, collapsed or internally damaged hose can reduce coolant flow through the heater core, butheater core not workingor no cabin heat can also be caused by low coolant, trapped air, a clogged heater core, thermostat problems or HVAC blend-door faults. Replace a hose that leaks, bulges, cracks, becomes unusually soft or brittle, or feels gritty near the connections—an indicator of internal deterioration. Inspect hoses regularly and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s replacement interval rather than waiting for anold hose failureor overheating event.

A reachable straightheater hose with clampscan be a reasonable DIY repair for someone experienced with draining, refilling and bleeding a cooling system. Work only when the engine is fully cold, match the ID and routing, stay above the minimum bend radius, and torque clamps to the vehicle/clamp maker’s specification.

Worm-gear clamps are adjustable; spring or constant-tension clamps better follow heat cycles. Professional cost varies sharply by vehicle access and whether the job uses inexpensive bulk hose or a costly molded assembly. A current U.S. estimator lists an average installed heater-hose replacement at $572–$647, but a simple accessible hose can be much less.
