Match Push Lock Fittings to the Hose and AN Size

Choose these push on fittings by checking both sides of the connection. Match the barb to the rubber fuel hose inside diameter, then match the AN size to the mating pump, filter, regulator, tank adapter or other AN component. The fittings in this collection are intended for rubber fuel lines, so do not assume they will assemble correctly with PTFE hose. Choose the Fitting Angle Before Cutting the Fuel Hose

Use a straight rubber hose fitting for a direct run, a 45-degree or 90-degree fitting to route around nearby components, or a tighter return angle when the line must reverse direction within limited space. Additional 30-degree, 60-degree, 120-degree and 150-degree options are available on selected Evil Energy designs. Plan the route before cutting the hose so the finished line is not twisted, pulled sideways or forced below its intended bend radius. Are Push Lock Fittings Reliable for Automotive Fuel Lines?

Push lock fittings can provide a dependable automotive fuel-line connection when the fitting, rubber hose and retention method are designed to work together and are installed correctly. They should not be evaluated as standalone parts. The safe working pressure and temperature of the finished hose assembly are limited by its lowest-rated component, which may be the hose rather than the aluminum fitting.

For a reliable installation:

• Use a rubber fuel hose approved for the intended fuel and system pressure
• Match the hose inside diameter to the fitting barb
• Insert the hose completely over the barbed section
• Follow the specified clamp instructions
• Route the line away from heat, abrasion, sharp edges and excessive bending
• Pressure-test and inspect the completed connection before regular use

These automotive push on fittings are different from pneumatic push to connect fittings that seal rigid tubing with a collet and internal O ring.

Begin with the rubber fuel hose inside diameter, then select the corresponding AN size and fitting angle. The Evil Energy size relationships are:

4AN push lock fitting: 1/4-inch barb

6AN push lock fitting: 3/8-inch barb

8AN push lock fitting: 1/2-inch barb

10AN push lock fitting: 5/8-inch barb

12AN push lock fitting: 3/4-inch barb

Next, confirm that the AN side matches the mating component and choose an angle that allows the hose to reach the component without twisting or kinking. Finally, verify the hose material, fuel compatibility, working pressure, temperature range and clamp requirement. A fitting’s rating alone does not establish the rating of the completed push lock fuel line.

Use the following process for automotive rubber hose fittings:

  1. Confirm that the hose material and inside diameter match the fitting
  2. Cut the hose end cleanly and squarely with no crushed or frayed edge
  3. Slide the specified clamp onto the hose before inserting the fitting when a clamp is required
  4. Inspect the fitting barb for scratches, dents or contamination
  5. Support the fitting securely and push the hose fully over the barb to the intended seated position
  6. Position and tighten the approved clamp according to the hose or clamp instructions
  7. Check that the hose is not twisted, stretched or bent too sharply
  8. Test the assembled line and inspect every connection for seepage before operating the vehicle normally

Do not use an open flame to soften the hose, and do not apply an improvised lubricant unless it is approved for the hose material and fuel system.

A compatible hose clamp is recommended with the individual Evil Energy push lock hose ends in this collection for additional retention on the rubber fuel hose. Fully seat the hose on the barb before positioning the clamp, and use a clamp compatible with the hose outside diameter and fuel application.

Clamp requirements are not universal across every brand of push lock or push on system. Some engineered hose-and-fitting systems prohibit external clamps, while others are specifically designed to use them. Follow the instructions for the exact Evil Energy hose, fitting and clamp combination being assembled rather than applying instructions from a pneumatic or different-brand push lock system. Excessive clamp force can deform or damage the hose.

Do not automatically reuse a disconnected push lock fitting. The section of hose previously stretched or clamped over the barb should not be reinstalled. Use a fresh, undamaged hose end.

The metal fitting may be considered for reuse only when reuse is permitted for that fitting and it can be removed without cutting, scratching or flattening the barbs. After removal, inspect the following areas:

Every barb and retention edge

The AN flare sealing surface

Threads and swivel movement

Cracks, bending, corrosion or tool damage

If the barb was nicked during hose removal, the flare surface is scratched, the fitting is distorted or its reuse status cannot be confirmed, replace the fitting. A damaged barb can cut the replacement hose or reduce its ability to remain secured.
