How often should I replace my engine air filter?

There's no universal number. Most owner's manuals specify an inspection interval and replacement as needed. In clean highway and suburban driving a quality filter can run past 15,000 miles — AAA notes some go 20,000 or more. On gravel, in construction traffic, in dusty regions or through wildfire smoke, that window shrinks sharply. Practical approach: check your manual, inspect at every second oil change, and replace based on how loaded the media is rather than on a round odometer number.

Sluggish acceleration and weak throttle response are the most reliable signs, along with rough idle, visible dirt loading, and in severe cases a check engine light. A heavily restricted filter can contribute to hesitation and jerking under acceleration — but so can ignition coils, spark plugs, fuel delivery and throttle body deposits. The filter is the cheapest thing to rule out first; if a fresh one doesn't fix it, keep diagnosing.

Two different filters, two different jobs. The engine air filter sits in the airbox under the hood and protects the engine from airborne debris. The cabin air filter sits behind the glove box or under the dash and cleans the air coming through your vents — it protects you, filtering pollen, dust, exhaust and smoke. They aren't interchangeable, use different media, and have different intervals. Weak A/C airflow or a musty cabin smell points to the cabin filter, not the engine filter.

Labor is where cost multiplies — shop quotes of $80–$180 are common for a job most people finish in 10–20 minutes. On the large majority of vehicles this is a genuine DIY task: follow the intake tube back to the black airbox, release the clips, swap the element, wipe out loose debris, close the lid. Make sure the sealing edge is fully seated — a gap lets unfiltered air bypass the media entirely.
