Lap joint exhaust clamp

What does the lap joint exhaust clamp connect?

The lap joint exhaust clamp seals an overlapping exhaust connection, where a smaller outside-diameter (OD) pipe slides into a larger inside-diameter (ID) receiver. Its 2.94 inch wide 304 stainless band is stepped to follow both diameters, so it presses on the pipe and the receiver at the same time and closes the overlap gap all the way around.

No welding is needed, and the clamp unbolts for exhaust service or rerouting.

Lap joint clamp step: pipe side versus receiver side

Each size has two inside diameters, one for the inner pipe and one for the expanded receiver.

Size Pipe side ID Receiver side ID Step
2.0 in 51 mm 54 mm (2.12 in) 3 mm
2.25 in 57 mm 60 mm (2.36 in) 3 mm
2.5 in 63.5 mm 67 mm (2.64 in) 3.5 mm
3.0 in 76 mm 80 mm (3.15 in) 4 mm
4.0 in 101.6 mm 106 mm (4.17 in) 4.4 mm

2.75, 3.5 and 5.0 inch follow the same stepped design.

Lap-joint fitment: check OD and ID before ordering

Lap joint clamp aligning a 2.0 inch OD pipe inside a 2.0 inch ID receiver with 360 degree force

This clamp is designed for an overlapping pipe connection, not for two pipe ends placed edge to edge. The diagram shows a 2.0 inch OD pipe sliding into a 2.0 inch ID pipe port with 2 mm wall thickness, then the band applying 360° uniform force to prevent deformation and leakage. Measure the smaller pipe's OD and the receiving pipe's ID to confirm the pipe slides in and the clamp size matches the joint.

Lap joint clamp materials: 304 stainless steel band, aluminum alloy I-block, steel gasket, zinc-plated M10 bolts

Materials and clamp design

The lap joint clamp uses a 304 stainless steel band, an aluminum alloy I-block, a steel gasket, and zinc-plated M10 bolts and nuts. The band design distributes clamping force around the joint; fitment, pipe condition and correct installation decide how well the connection seals.

Melting point of each clamp material

304 band2552°F+
I-block1205°F+

The I-block has the lower melting point, so mount it away from direct contact with a catalytic converter shell.

Close-up of lap joint clamp I-block with arc curved face for a tighter connection

I-block design for a tighter connection

The I-block's arc-curved faces wrap the band ends so the bolts pull the band evenly closed. The result is a tighter, rounder grip than a flat bolt bracket gives.

Four-step installation for the EVIL ENERGY lap joint exhaust band clamp

Four-step installation diagram for the EVIL ENERGY lap joint exhaust clamp

1

Check the fit

Confirm the pipe OD and receiver ID are compatible, then slide the smaller pipe into the receiver.

2

Position the clamp

Place the band over the overlap so the step sits at the receiver's edge.

3

Assemble the hardware

Align the I-block, steel gasket, bolts, washers and nuts as shown in the diagram.

4

Torque the bolts

Tighten alternately to about 63 N·m (46 lb-ft) with a torque wrench.

Lap joint exhaust clamp on pipes, mufflers and catalytic converters

Exhaust system applications

Use the exhaust band clamp on slip-fit exhaust tubing, muffler and resonator connections, and catalytic converter service. Check the pipe OD, receiver ID, overlap length and available clearance before installation.

Fitment checklist

  • ✓Measure the pipe OD and the receiving pipe ID; do not rely on the nominal size label alone.
  • ✓Confirm the pipe inserts into the receiver and the clamp covers the overlapping joint.
  • ✓Check that the pipe end and receiver are round and in good condition for clamping.
  • ✓Make sure the clamp and I-block clear nearby brackets, heat shields and frame components.
  • ✓Use the specified torque and follow the installation steps.

If you need further information or assistance, feel free to ask!

Q: Can a lap joint exhaust clamp be reused?

A: Generally yes. A wide band clamp can be removed and reinstalled as long as the band has not cracked, the I-block is not distorted, and the bolt threads are clean. If the band took a permanent set around a pipe that has since rusted thin, replace the clamp along with the pipe.

Q: How do I know if my exhaust connection is a lap joint?

A: One pipe end is expanded and the other pipe slides inside it, so there is a visible step where they overlap. Two pipe ends of the same size touching each other is a butt joint instead.

Q: What receiver ID fits the 2.5 inch lap joint exhaust clamp?

A: The 2.5 inch clamp grips a 2.5 inch OD pipe (63.5 mm) on one side and a receiver up to 67 mm (2.64 in) ID on the other. Measure the receiver OD as well: the band's receiver side must close around it.

Q: Why choose a lap joint band clamp instead of a U-bolt on a slip-fit joint?

A: The lap joint band wraps the full overlap and follows the step between pipe and receiver, so it seals all the way around and leaves both pipes round for later removal. A U-bolt clamp works well on slip-fit joints that will stay assembled.

Q: What torque does the lap joint exhaust clamp need?

A: About 63 N·m (46 lb-ft). Tighten the two bolts alternately so the band closes evenly.

Q: Does the lap joint clamp need exhaust sealant?

A: Not normally. Sealant helps when the receiver is slightly oversize, out of round or pitted; apply a thin bead around the inner pipe before sliding it in.

Q: How hot can the lap joint exhaust clamp get?

A: The 304 stainless band melts above 2552°F and the aluminum alloy I-block above 1205°F. The I-block is the limiting part, so keep it from resting directly on a catalytic converter shell.

Q: Can the lap joint clamp connect a muffler with an expanded inlet?

A: Yes. That is a lap joint: the pipe slides into the muffler's expanded inlet and the stepped band covers both.

Q: What if both pipes are the same size?

A: Then the joint is a butt joint, and the butt joint band clamp is the matching part.

Q: How far should the pipe slide into the receiver?

A: Far enough that the band's step sits over the receiver's edge with the narrow side fully on the inner pipe. On a 2.94 inch wide band, that usually means the inner pipe reaches at least past the center of the band.
