Q: What is the difference between an AN flare fitting and an ORB fitting?

A: An AN flare seals on a 37° metal cone at the tip of the fitting; an ORB seals on a rubber O-ring against a flat seat at the base of the port. The threads on both are straight — they only provide clamping force, not sealing.

That difference has real consequences. AN 37° flare joints are for connecting hose to fitting and can be assembled and disassembled repeatedly with no consumables. ORB (O-Ring Boss, SAE J1926) joints are for threading into a component port — a fuel rail, regulator, filter head, or fuel cell bung. Because the O-ring does the work, an ORB port survives dozens of installs where a tapered NPT port would slowly deform.

Both differ from NPT, which is a tapered thread that seals by metal deforming against metal as it wedges deeper.

Q: Do I need Teflon tape or thread sealant on an ORB fitting?
