Matching a carburetor to a Big Block Chevy involves more than choosing the largest available CFM rating. This EVIL ENERGY combination pairs a dual plane intake manifold for compatible BBC 396, 402, 427, and 454 V8 engines with a 750 CFM carburetor using mechanical secondaries, electric choke, and dual fuel inlets. It is intended for naturally aspirated street and street-performance combinations where usable low-to-mid RPM response and direct secondary throttle operation are both priorities.
The intake manifold is designed around a 2,500-4,500 RPM operating range, while the mechanical-secondary carburetor responds directly to throttle movement. This pairing is better suited to engines with sufficient displacement, airflow, gearing, and supporting modifications than to a mild combination that spends most of its time under light throttle.
Before ordering: Confirm the actual Big Block Chevy engine and cylinder heads, carburetor mounting interface, required airflow, fuel pressure, dual-feed fuel plumbing, throttle and transmission linkage, electric choke wiring, air cleaner height, and hood clearance.

| Engine / Build | What to Know Before Ordering |
|---|---|
| Compatible BBC 396 / 402 / 427 / 454 | Compatible engine family when the cylinder heads, intake interface, fuel system, linkage, and clearance are verified. |
| 427 / 454 street-performance build | A strong application candidate when the engine has sufficient airflow demand and the intended RPM range matches the dual plane intake. |
| Modified 396 / 402 | Verify carburetor sizing. Camshaft, cylinder heads, compression, RPM, gearing, and vehicle use determine whether 750 CFM is appropriate. |
| Stock or mildly modified BBC | A 750 CFM mechanical-secondary carburetor may be more aggressive than necessary for some combinations. |
| Performance street / hot rod | Better aligned with the direct secondary response of the mechanical-secondary carburetor. |
| Low-speed cruising-focused build | A less aggressive carburetor configuration may provide characteristics better matched to the intended use. |
| Small Block Chevy / LS / unrelated engine family | Not compatible. This intake manifold is designed around compatible Big Block Chevrolet applications. |
A 750 CFM carburetor should be matched to the actual airflow demand of the engine rather than selected from displacement alone. Engine size, maximum RPM, volumetric efficiency, camshaft profile, cylinder-head airflow, compression ratio, exhaust, gearing, vehicle weight, and intended use all affect carburetor sizing.
For many properly configured 427 and 454 performance combinations, 750 CFM can be a practical starting point. Modified 396 and 402 engines may also use this airflow level when the complete engine combination supports it. A stock or lightly modified engine operating primarily at lower RPM may not require the same airflow or secondary response.
The same applies when selecting a 454 big block carburetor: engine displacement is only one part of the calculation. A larger carburetor does not automatically improve throttle response or overall drivability when airflow demand is lower than the carburetor's available capacity.

The included carburetor uses mechanical secondaries, so secondary throttle opening is linked directly to throttle movement. This creates a more immediate secondary response than an air valve- or vacuum-controlled arrangement when the throttle is opened aggressively.
That response can work well in performance-oriented applications, but it also places greater importance on correct carburetor sizing, accelerator-pump calibration, gearing, engine airflow, and throttle technique. A mechanical-secondary carburetor should therefore be selected as part of the complete engine and vehicle combination rather than from CFM alone.
The electric choke provides cold-start enrichment when properly wired and adjusted. Choke operation should be verified during initial setup along with idle speed, idle mixture, accelerator-pump response, and throttle linkage.

The dual plane intake manifold is designed to maintain air velocity and carburetor signal through the low-to-mid RPM range. This gives the combination a different operating character from a high-RPM single plane intake.
The manifold's listed 2,500-4,500 RPM range makes the combination primarily relevant to street and street-performance BBC builds where usable torque and throttle response matter. The mechanical-secondary carburetor adds a more direct response under larger throttle inputs without changing the manifold's intended operating range.
The manifold RPM range is an intake-system specification, not a guarantee of engine performance. Actual operating characteristics depend on displacement, cylinder heads, camshaft, compression, exhaust, ignition, fuel delivery, transmission, gearing, and vehicle load.
This intake manifold and carburetor combination is intended for compatible carbureted 1965-2000 Chevrolet Big Block 396, 402, 427, and 454 V8 engine applications.
Reference applications may include Camaro, Chevelle, Impala, El Camino, Corvette, Monte Carlo, Caprice, Chevrolet and GMC C/K trucks, Suburban, Step-Van, and other vehicles equipped with a compatible Big Block Chevrolet engine.
Vehicle year, make, and model alone do not confirm fitment. Classic vehicles frequently have engine swaps, aftermarket cylinder heads, transmission changes, intake conversions, and other modifications. Confirm the engine and cylinder-head configuration actually installed before ordering.
This kit should not be assumed to fit Small Block Chevy, GM LS, Ford, Mopar, or unrelated engine families.
The manifold and carburetor are only part of the complete induction and fuel system. The following interfaces should be verified before installation:
| System | What to Verify |
|---|---|
| Cylinder Heads | Confirm intake-port alignment, intake bolt pattern, and the correct intake manifold gasket. |
| Carburetor Mounting | Confirm the mounting pattern, carburetor gasket, mounting hardware, and whether a spacer or adapter is required. |
| Fuel Delivery | Verify carburetor fuel pressure, fuel filter, line size, routing, fittings, and the plumbing required for the dual fuel inlets. |
| Throttle & Transmission Linkage | Check throttle cable bracket, return springs, full throttle travel, and transmission linkage requirements. |
| Electric Choke | Confirm the correct electrical connection and choke adjustment before operation. |
| Vacuum / PCV | Identify PCV, brake-booster, distributor vacuum, and other required vacuum connections and seal unused ports. |
| Air Cleaner & Hood Clearance | Check the complete installed height of the manifold, carburetor, gasket, any spacer or adapter, and the air cleaner. |
| BBC Dual Plane Intake Manifold x 1 | EVIL ENERGY dual plane intake manifold for compatible BBC 396, 402, 427, and 454 V8 applications. |
|---|---|
| 750 CFM 4-Barrel Carburetor x 1 | EVIL ENERGY square-bore carburetor with mechanical secondaries, electric choke, and dual fuel inlets. |
| Intake Manifold Installation Hardware x 1 Set | Includes the supplied manifold mounting hardware and installation accessories. |
The exact installation parts depend on the engine and vehicle configuration. Check whether the build requires:

Do not begin by changing jets simply because the engine runs rich, lean, hesitates, or idles poorly. Verify the basic installation and supporting systems before changing carburetor calibration.
Vacuum leaks, incorrect fuel pressure, restricted fuel delivery, float or needle-seat problems, accelerator-pump adjustment, ignition faults, and timing errors can produce symptoms that resemble incorrect carburetor calibration.
